Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy in New Albany, OH

Root canal therapy, or endodontic therapy, has a reputation as being extremely painful and stressful. However, Drs. Chris and Beth Clark and the staff at Clark Family Dental can perform this procedure with no more discomfort than having a filling placed.

Root canal therapy is performed when infecting bacteria has spread down into the root pulp, or the soft inner core of a tooth that houses the tooth’s nerves. These infections are generally caused by cavities that haven’t been reated and break down through the tooth’s hard enamel. They can also occur when the tooth is chipped or cracked and bacteria can invade the tooth’s inner layers. Infections of the root pulp can cause swelling in the mouth and other parts of the jaw and face, painful pus-filled abscesses at the base of the affected tooth, and bone decay under the tooth that eventually leads to tooth loss.

Many people get scared when they hear the term “root canal.” You might be worried that this procedure will be extremely painful, even if you’ve never had it done, because of the cultural way we use “root canal” as a metaphor for any extremely uncomfortable situation. But with today’s techniques, the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and the comforting care of Drs. Chris and Beth Clark, there’s no need to fear a root canal. We’ll clean out the chamber of all infected nerve and tissue, detoxify thoroughly, and fill in the tooth. If anything, a root canal will prevent a lot of future pain and expense. Remember, if left untreated, a tooth in need of a root canal can become a tooth in need of extraction!

To treat a pulp infection, our experts at Clark Family Dental will first give you a local anesthetic to make the procedure comfortable. Then we will drill into your tooth to access the pulp and will remove it, the tooth’s nerve, and all of the bacterial contamination/pus. The pulp and nerve are not necessary for an adult tooth to function, so their removal will only remove the tooth’s ability to feel cold and hot. Once the inside of the tooth is clean, we will fill in the hole and place a crown on the tooth to protect it from further decay. Pain medication can be given before and after the procedure as necessary. Until the final fillings and crowns are in place, it’s a good idea to keep pressure off the tooth as much as possible to keep it from breaking further.
